Traditional Mamuthones masks typical of Barbagia, a rural area in central Sardinia. They are handcrafted in black colored leather with brown leather straps, following the typical shapes used in the carnival of Mamoiada (Nuoro).
The Mamuthones are, together with the Issohadores, typical masks of the carnival of Mamoiada in Sardinia. The two figures are distinguished by their clothes and the way they move around the procession: the Mamuthones proceed wearily and in silence while the Issohadores dress in a colorful way and give movement to the procession. The face mask of the mamuthone (visor) is black. It is secured to the face by leather straps and surrounded by a handkerchief in a feminine style. The body of the mamuthone is covered with black sheep skins (mastruca), while a series of cowbells (carriga) are placed on the back.
